Love, Japan Style: With Smart Phones & Virtual Girls
BEING A GIGANTIC GEEK, OF COURSE I HAVE AN ODD RELATIONSHIP WITH JAPAN. Quite of a few of my favorite things come from there: video games, anime, pocky, giant robot fights. But every now and then a story pops up that just makes me shake my head and sigh:
A new vacation resort in Atami, Japan allows gamers to date virtual girlfriends from the video game Love Plus. The game lets boys kiss and hold hands with virtual girls Manaka, Rinko or Nene.
Created by Konami Digital Entertainment, the game lets geeks chase the "virtual girls...of their digital dreams," according to Agency France Presse.
"The virtual girls can kiss you as a way of communication, but nothing happens when she sleeps next to you at the hotel," said Kunio Ishihara, a spokesman for Konami. "We have no intention of trying to sell a product with pornographic elements.
Listen, I love the idea of blending the real and virtual and think more game companies should consider it. Imagine playing World of Warcraft where the player needs to leave your home and travel to a place where you have to catch five fish in order to complete the quest. And Wii Sports would gain a whole new level of immersion by allowing players to go to a batting cage and play ball with a full roster. The idea is sound and should be looked at, and iure would get a lot of nerds off their asses.
The Japanese have created other weird stuff like a life-sized Gundam (a giant robot from an anime of the same name), used panty vending machines (a now defunct practice), and even having “Maid Cafes” (sort of like hooters but with coffee, tea and maids).
But the latest trend takes the crazy cake: Vacationing with a virtual girl is sad and creepy.
