In The News: Dying Dogs, Dyeing Dogs

By Elizabeth C.

TUESDAY'S NEWS BROUGHT US STARK ILLUSTRATION OF THE PHRASE, "IT'S A DOG'S LIFE."

We had dying dogs -- puppies casually tossed in a river by a teenage girl. And dyeing dogs -- pics of pups in China getting their hair colored.

If you needed glaring examples of the crap shoot that life is, these stories provided them.

A video depicting a young girl standing by a bank of water and throwing tiny puppies downstream embroiled the Internet. And while some thought the girl seemed to be enjoying herself, to me it looked like the puppies’ death was all in a day’s work. Sad, but true and proof that the world needs birth control for dogs too.

According to LaLate, "Katja Puschnik and Antonia Miskic are two names being used in international news today as the hunt to identify the girl who threw the puppies into river widens." Stay tuned.

Then over at CNN.com they whipped out a summer evergreen – a story without a deadline – and amused us with a feature on the Chinese trend of dyeing dogs' hair.

We got a glimpse of a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Poodle,"’ a "panda dog," and a tiger-striped pooch.

"It's the latest trend in pet fashion in China: dyeing pets to look like something different,"’ CNN reports, but a quick Internet search shows the practice dates back at least a decade when one blog questioned whether a "bad dye" job would qualify as animal abuse.

"I think he loves it," one pet owner coos. "Since he's been dyed, he gets lots of love and attention."

Oy vey. One day: two different dog stories.

As we say at CrabbyGolightly, life is complicated.
